2021 Update:
This article which has already been viewed over 150,000 times volition soon be updated with more of the latest lenses, stay tuned!
Even though Olympus recently appear major news, Olympus cameras tin still be purchased and micro four thirds lenses however come in such variety they are hard not to love.
So if you're looking for the all-time lens for your MFT mirrorless photographic camera, read this.
It'southward true that gear doesn't replace the ability to see and I adopt to focus on taking photos rather than spend tardily nights locked in my bedchamber reading dirty magazines total of sexy lenses.
Simply since I frequently get asked what MFT lenses I'd recommend, at that place you lot have it!
We're really spoiled for choice and that's one of the many reasons I initially chose micro four thirds. And so allow me make it a little easier for you micro four 3rd users with this objective review of MFT lenses which I've used extensively for my own work.
This review volition not explore private pixels or graphs, because we all have meliorate things to exercise... like beingness out shooting!
Instead, this is nigh my all-encompassing feel using these lenses shooting urban street photography, London landscapes and other genres including cinemagraphs either for my own enjoyment or for clients.
Before we go any further, don't completely rule out buying second-mitt lenses.
Information technology'due south something of class a little scary only I bought my Voigtlander and my Pana Leica 45mm 2d paw for top Ebay sellers (cheque feedback carefully) and they were like new, only... a lot cheaper.
Voigtlander Nokton 17.5mm f/0.95
Cost: Effectually £740-£799
This is a great lens for street photography. Micro 4 Thirds prime lenses don't go better than this. I wrote about this transmission focusing lens immediately later on I bought it and since so, it has barely left my East-M5 Marker Two and Pen-F, I accept now spent thousands of hours shooting with it and it'due south made all other lenses virtually redundant.
How practiced has a transmission lens got to be for me to favour information technology over the easy option of fast automobile-focus?
Information technology'southward my accented favourite, perchance the perfect prime lens for street photography and yet it's just humble metal and glass, no electronics. Of course that means no EXIF information but it'southward not a bargain breaker for me since I rarely look at EXIF data anyway.
As well a great i for video for you video lovers!
Check out "The Great Londoners" series which was at the center of my last 3 calendar month exhibition and shot entirely using this lens.
A 35mm full frame equivalent, it's very special and produces aesthetics unique to it, call it Voigtlander'esque. The skin tones and colours rendering are simply amazing. The ultra wide aperture makes information technology ideal in very low calorie-free or for anyone wanting super fast shutter speeds. Bring it up to f2.eight and it reaches elevation sharpness.
The shallow depth of field has multiple applications from isolating your subject area in street photography to creating a very high-sounding / dreamy look in close-ups such as in food photography or cinemagraphs. Yes, it can focus extremely close! They say 15cm minimum but I manage seven-8cm. The structure and quality is reminiscent of former schoolhouse lenses, information technology's solid.
Information technology'southward heavy, it'south beautiful, only more importantly, everything takes on a new artistic dimension with the Nokton. Whenever you run out of ideas or inspiration, screw it on and go for a walk. You'll never come home empty handed (unless you get mugged of grade). It'll change the way you shoot and see things, bringing excitement back if you've somehow lost your mojo, which we all have experienced at least once.
Panasonic Leica DG Summilux 25mm f/1.4 ASPH
Cost: Around £429
For a long time this lens was my favourite. It'southward only just surpassed by the Voigtlander. The image quality is fantastic, really sharp and the f1.four discontinuity ways it'll shoot extremely well in low light and it's easy to carry around since it's very meaty and low-cal. I use information technology for portraits, food, urban and street photography (for a lot of street photographers a 50mm equivalent is the perfect focal length). Information technology's actually a very versatile focal length I observe.
My only dislike it the rattling sound information technology makes when focusing.
Olympus - Chiliad.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 75mm f/1.viii
Cost: Around £699
This prime lens needs trivial to no introduction. It's the portrait lens with a slightly unusual/awkward focal length (150mm FF equivalent) merely it actually shoots and focuses well. It's a fast lens, over again with a cute shallow depth of field and it's built the way old school lenses were. It'southward probably the sharpest of the lot here and I have establish information technology interesting for street photography (once familiar with the altitude required to shoot) as well every bit my minimal urban photography where I attempt to pick on specific details of compages.
Olympus - M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 12-40mm f/ii.8 Pro
Price: Around £799
I take recently found myself using this lens more and more. I'm not much of a zoom lens person but they are for certain convenient and this one is as shut as it gets to a prime in terms of quality. Definitely a professional person standard lens, that is fast and tranquility in auto-focusing and sharp. Being a London photographer, I get my fair corporeality of rain. This lens is atmospheric condition sealed then that's a BIG high v. Merely conduct in mind you'll demand a weather condition sealed torso such as the EM1 or EM5 Marker 2 to take full advantage of that. Structure is solid and it'southward a very versatile lens which can be used for a multitude of applications. I found it perfect for video, Interiors Photography (click link or run into examples below) also equally some of my Urban Landscapes and street shooting and even a rare wedding I shot! The constant aperture of f2.8 makes information technology perform pretty consistently in various light weather. Some other lens which yous tin switch from auto to manual focus by a simple pull of the focus band, I find that particularly useful when I shoot timelapse then I can pre-focus and then switch to transmission so my focus doesn't change. A unique and excellent feature is the improver of an L-Fn button which tin can be customised from the camera menu.
Panasonic Lumix K 10 Vario 35-100mm f/2.8 Power OIS
Cost: Around £895
I mentioned earlier using the Olympus 75mm f1.eight for my minimal urban photography. Well really the one I use most for this is the Panasonic 35-100mm. Again, that's a weather sealed lens of excellent construction so perfect for the London life. The constant aperture of f2.8 allows it to perform consistantly well throughout the 35-100mm range. Telephoto lenses (especially this one since it's not as well big) are very useful in an urban environment. I never shoot street photography with it, simply it'southward smashing for shooting compages and close-upwards details of our cities and I've seen myself utilize information technology for corporate events too and gigs. It may non take the range of the Olympus M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED forty-150mm f/2.8 PRO but information technology's likewise a lot smaller and so really a matter of personal preference since having tried both, I remember IQ is very on par.
Olympus - M.ZUIKO DIGITAL 17mm f/1.8
Cost: Effectually £349
That is a Corking trivial lens. For days when I just don't want to behave my sweet sweet (yet heavy) Voigtlander or bother with manual focus, the 17mm f1.8 is a go to lens for street photography or just everyday snaps. It's also a lot smaller, less intimidating for people I shoot and cheaper if you're on a budget yet looking for a very skilful everyday 17mm lens. I love the all metallic construction and switch from auto-focus to transmission past simply pulling the ring As for the 12-40mm, it's convenient equally long equally you don't pull it by mistake and realise equally you take THE shot that you're in manual. I may sound amateur here, but in a street photography situation, you ofttimes get your photographic camera out in a rush. Merely all in all, a bully lens and one of the cheapest. Paired with the Pen-F it makes for a very compact and light combination.
Panasonic Leica DG Macro-Elmarit 45mm f/ii.viii ASPH
Price: Effectually £549
This is a very proficient portrait lens actually, probably one which gives the to the lowest degree distortion, quite important for portraits. I also have used it for street photography and it's abrupt. But every bit the name suggests, what this lens excels in is macro photography. Beware though, you'll have to go close... a niggling too close, and that'south catchy for anything that moves such as insects, etc...
Samyang (Rokinon) 7.5mm f/3.v UMC Fish-eye MFT
Toll: Effectually £225-£250
This lens goes by Samyang or Rokinon depending on the market but essentially the aforementioned lens. Another manual focusing lens, so not for everyone. Although it has such a huge depth of field it's rarely an result especially on urban landscapes where you've got enough of time to set the focus. It's quite cool for urban shots in full general. I sometimes mix it with in-photographic camera art filters such every bit cantankerous-process or tilt-shift and they really produce interesting results. Beware though using this on the E-M1 or any camera with a protruding grip... it'south hard not to get your correct hand in the pic as it'southward so wide! So maybe meliorate suited for a Pen, EM5 or EM5 Mark II. The large affair information technology's got going for information technology is a very decent image quality for a ridiculously cheap price compared to other fisheye lenses. And it's the tiniest lens too. I've ever loved fisheye lenses to expect at things differently. Ideal if you run out of inspiration, screw it on and have fun, 1 of the key factors to being artistic!
Voila! I have of course not covered the unabridged catalog of lenses for MFT, but instead the ones I love, which I bought myself as an MFT user.
If I had to sell all of them and keep 1? It'd be without hesitation the Voigtlander... merely so I call up you guessed that.
Happy shooting!
Nico
